Pathogenic on Steam ships 7 playable pathogens — each with its own starting kit, graft layout, and permanent plasmid tree. This pathogenic game pathogens database compares every species so you can pick a first run, plan unlocks, and route co-op Diatom without confusing biology search results. Your first Pathogenic game run should almost always be Bacteria. It is unlocked from the menu, teaches ranged and melee grafting without exotic slot rules, and its plasmid tree includes straightforward health and organelle unlocks that make the second attempt much easier.
| Player goal | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First Steam clear | Balanced starter kit · forgiving plasmid nodes · no unlock gate | |
| Learn graft editor | Reshape-friendly body · rewards repositioning organelles mid-run | |
| Melee / spike focus | Natural spike bias · strong phagocytosis challenge synergy | |
| Minion / swarm fantasy | Spore and summon organelles scale hard with mitochondria | |
| Tank / armor stacking | Armor cores and plating nodes · slower but stable | |
| High skill mobility | Speed and dash plasmids · needs unlock investment | |
| Glass cannon lasers | Secretor-heavy kits · unlocks after several species clears |
Pathogen choice matters less than organelle synergy for your first five runs. Read how organelles slot together, then return here to specialize. The beginner guide walks the full first-run loop if you have not cleared Skin yet.
Once you can reliably reach a mid-organ boss, the roster table below becomes the reference you keep open between attempts.
These are the seven pathogenic game pathogens in the Steam release — not medical pathogen definitions. Each row summarizes role, starting bias, and where to push plasmids first. Slot counts grow as you mutate mid-run; numbers below describe early-run identity.

| Pathogen | Role | Starting bias | Unlock | Plasmid focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter all-rounder | Mixed secretor + spike options | Default | Health · stash slot · basic weapon nodes | |
| Melee bruiser | Spike / touch damage | Achievement: clear with Bacteria | Knockback · spike tiers · phagocytosis synergy | |
| Minion commander | Spore emitters and swarm organs | Achievement: multi-kill rooms | Minion caps · spawn rate · nidus chains | |
| Flexible shapeshifter | Reshape and pseudopod slots | Achievement: graft count in one run | Slot flexibility · reshape cooldown · hybrid builds | |
| Armor tank | Plating and core generation | Achievement: hold eight armor at once | Armor retention · core burst · damage reduction | |
| Speed skirmisher | Flagella and dash mutations | Achievement: clear Lungs on Antibiotics | Move speed · dash charges · stamina recovery | |
| Ranged artillery | Secretor chains and infusers | Achievement: six species infected | Projectile count · infuser links · overcharge windows |
Bacteria’s body is compact enough to read in the organelle editor on a first run. You can attach a secretor for range, a spike for melee defense, and one mitochondria without fighting awkward slot angles. Most community “first clear” routes assume Bacteria plasmids that add a stash slot and one extra mutation choice.
Helminth wants you in the immune cell’s face: spikes delete projectiles and knock enemies back, which pairs with phagocytosis challenge mode later. Spore instead floods the room with minions; its power spikes when mitochondria overcharge spawn rates. If you dislike positioning, start Spore only after you understand flagella pacing.
Amoeba rewards dragging organelles around freely — repositioning a secretor behind a spike changes reach and mass in ways other pathogens cannot. Nanobot is the opposite: stack armor cores, absorb mistakes, and win boss DPS checks through sustained overcharge rather than dodging every bullet.
Protozoa becomes one of the strongest speed runners once its dash plasmids are online; until then it feels fragile in Lungs airflow rooms. Virus is the secretor playground — infusers chain farther on its frame, but you need prior clears to unlock it and feed its tree.
After you pick a main, compare graft targets on the builds page and ranked parts on the organelles tier list.

Bosses drop plasmid fragments spent only on the pathogen you played that run. Trees are not shared — Bacteria health nodes do nothing for Virus until you grind Bacteria again. Plan one “main” species for metaprogression each week.

| Pathogen | Tree identity | Nodes to rush first | Late-game payoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| General survival | Stash slot · +HP · reroll | Stable baseline for unlock grinding | |
| Melee scaling | Spike damage · knockback radius | Phagocytosis and heart boss burst | |
| Minion economy | Spawn cap · minion HP | Swarm clears on dense immune waves | |
| Build flexibility | Reshape speed · extra internal slot | Hybrid secretor/spike layouts | |
| Armor systems | Core generation · armor retain | Antibiotics mid difficulty clears | |
| Mobility | Dash charges · flagella boost | Lungs and heart kiting | |
| Artillery | Infuser range · projectile fork | Brain boss ranged safety |
Dying as Amoeba still banks fragments for Amoeba only. Many players finish Bacteria’s first horizontal row before investing heavily in a specialty pick. Full node maps and farming order live on the plasmid tree guide.
Several pathogens hide alternate starting organelles behind plasmid nodes — not just stat bumps. Check the codex after each purchase; some nodes swap your default weapon entirely, which changes early-room tempo more than a raw +10% damage line.
Once a tree row is funded, co-op or Diatom runs become the fastest way to test new nodes without risking solo streaks — covered next.
Diatom is not an eighth roster entry in the table above — it is a co-op pathogen where two halves share one host body (or one player controls both halves in solo Diatom mode since the July 22 patch). Pick it from the same select screen after enabling co-op; press X on Diatom to queue solo split-control if you have no partner.
Diatom shines when you want to experiment with oversized builds that would tip a solo body’s mass too far — one half can carry three secretors while the other handles mitochondria and flagella. Detailed duo strats are on the co-op guide.
Unlock achievements and most plasmid fragment farms still route through the seven solo pathogens. Use Diatom for practice and fun duos, not for your first account-wide unlock push.
If co-op is not your plan, the unlock checklist below finishes the roster faster.
Every non-Bacteria pathogen gates behind a codex-tracked achievement. Requirements are visible in-game; the table below is a route planner so you are not guessing after a failed run.
| Pathogen | Typical unlock route | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Beat the first organ boss with Bacteria | Melee rooms on Skin teach spike timing | |
| Clear several rooms with high kill counts | Area secretors finish this passively | |
| Graft many organelles in a single run | Take every reward room — do not skip grafts | |
| Hold eight armor at once | Stack plating cores before leaving Skin | |
| Clear Lungs on Antibiotics mid difficulty | Farm Bacteria plasmids first for HP | |
| Infect hosts with six other species | Unlock grind — plan six short clears, not one deep run |
Bacteria clear → Helminth or Spore for variety → Amoeba when you understand the editor → Nanobot when armor systems make sense → Protozoa when Lungs airflow is familiar → Virus last. Skipping straight to Virus without plasmid health is a common stall point.
Organ routing for Lungs and Antibiotics settings sits in the walkthrough. Boss checkpoints that drop extra fragments are listed under bosses. When the roster is complete, move to builds for pathogen-specific combos.

There are seven solo roster pathogens (Bacteria, Helminth, Spore, Amoeba, Nanobot, Protozoa, Virus). Diatom is a separate co-op (or solo split) mode on the same select screen.
No permanent “best” — Bacteria is the best first pick; Virus and Protozoa reward heavier plasmid investment. See the organelles tier list for graft rankings that matter more than species.
No. Fragments and purchased nodes bind to the pathogen you played that run. Demo plasmid progress on the same Steam account does carry into the full release.
